The Basics:


Inner-Light is an easy to use customisable LED light and sound effects solution designed to be used with any type of scale model. It consists of a tiny but powerful control computer, and several LED light chips which can be connected together in a daisy chain configuration. Each LED can generate multiple colors - ideal for model building lighting, or sci-fi model kit lighting.

Everything about the lighting system is customisable - which means that the exact same components are used, regardless of the type of model you are building, or the lighting effects you want to achieve.



All you need to decide is how many LEDs you require for your model. They interlock together, or you can use interconnecting cables - no soldering, and no computer code writing is required. *Note some LED components require soldering if you decide to use them. You can even control the lighting and sound effects from an iOS/Android device with a custom user interface - the possibilities are endless.

Easy to Use


The Inner Light system was designed for non-technical users - no computer / coding skills or advanced electronics knowledge is needed - the system is plug and play.

You can adjust the colors, brightness and light effects even after you install the LEDs in your model via the easy to use web interface.

You can control the lighting and sound effects using physical buttons, an iOS or Android device, perhaps utilising a custom user interface, or using your voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Whether you are building a sci-fi model starship, World War II aircraft, or model train scenery, you can almost certainly use Inner-Light to enhance your project.

Installing the LEDs in your model is easy - only 3 wires are required, the LEDs are daisy chained together. You then refer to each LED in order, and group them together if you want multiple LEDs to have the same color / effect applied.

Custom Colors


Each individual light chip is capable of producing any one of over 16.5 million color combinations made up of a red, green, blue and dedicated white micro LED contained within the unit.

You do not have to decide on the color or brightness of the lights during your build, just their physical location in the model.

The colors, brightness, and lighting effects can then all be configured afterwards.

You can also use LED lens caps to send light anywhere in your model using fibre optic strands:

Custom Effects


The control computer is capable of affecting any of the light chips, individually or grouped, to produce various effects and transitions.

For example, you may want certains lights flashing alternately between two different colors, with random or specific timing, a set number of times.

Or you may want to fade between different colors over a period of time, or emulate fire, lightning or welding etc.

The pro control computer also has an audio output for playing multiple sound effects to enhance your model.

Custom Control


There are several options to affect the current lighting scenes, including physical switches wired up to the pro control computer, or by connecting the pro control computer to a standard WiFi network.

By using the wireless network, it then becomes possible to control the lighting via one of several customisable control apps available on iOS or Android, or via services such as IFTTT.com.

Maybe you want to control the lighting effects using your voice, through Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Or perhaps you want to adjust the lighting based on external conditions - such as the location of your phone, or the weather, or the stock market....

System Components



 WARNING - all components sold are to be used for the purposes of home use diy scale model building by adults only. There are small parts which may present a choking hazard - it is essential that you keep all components out of reach of children. The LED lights are bright, and it is possible to program the lights to flash rapidly, so care should be taken with regards to epilepsy etc. Components use 5V DC power. Always disconnect the electricity supply before connecting / disconnecting any components.




Controller Options:

There are two controller options to choose from, Inner Light-Lite and Inner-Light-Pro. Both allow setup and configuration via an adhoc self-generated WiFi connection (and the Pro controller can be configured to join your existing WiFi network if you wish). No programming is required for either controller, setup is via an easy to use app / web interface.

LED types - do not mix!

Note there are 2 types of LEDs available, RGBW and RGB - the Lite Controller supports only a single RGB data chain, the Pro Controller support both types and has 2 LED data chains, however you should not mix the types on a single chain. The RGBW chips have a dedicated white LED, however note all the RGB versions are still capable of producing white light. The RGB chips come in both circular chip and frosted 5mm standard LED package for improved dispersion of light. The interlocking LEDs require no soldering.

This board allows you to control up to 6 x 5V DC devices, eg standard LEDs (including dimming), Laser Modules etc, as if they were addressable LEDs on the data chain. The board uses the same protocol as WS2811 / SK6815 addressable LEDs. 2 On board RGB LEDs are also incuded, which can be used with the fibre optic connectors if required. Multiple boards can be daisy chained together, or inserted anywhere on the addressable LED data line. The board takes up either 4 x RGB LED slots, or 3 x RGBW slots - it is compatible with either type of LED system. 500mA max per output.

Expansion Board (Pro Controller Only) - NEW (Quantity 1)

This board allows you to control up to 6 x 5V DC devices, eg standard LEDs (including dimming), Laser Modules etc, as if they were addressable LEDs on the data chain. The board uses the same protocol as WS2811 / SK6815 addressable LEDs. 2 On board RGB LEDs are also incuded, which can be used with the fibre optic connectors if required. Multiple boards can be daisy chained together, or inserted anywhere on the addressable LED data line. The board takes up either 4 x RGB LED slots, or 3 x RGBW slots - it is compatible with either type of LED system. 500mA max per output.

Compatible with the InnerLight Pro controller, or can be used in any standard neopixel / WS281x project. Note soldering is required (solderless version available on request)

Frequently Asked Questions



Is Inner-Light suitable for use in my scale model kit?

Yes - almost certainly. It doesn't matter what your model kit is, or what lighting effects you want to achieve - everything is configurable. Please contact me if you are unsure, but the solution is designed to work with any model.

Why did you create this lighting system?

Scale models are all about precision. After building many models as a hobby, I became frustrated with the existing lighting kits available. They all suffered from the same shortcomings, namely:

They were model specific.
The color and brightness of the lights could not be altered, certainly not after they were installed.
The lighting effects, if any, were limited and could not be altered
They required too many wires! This system just needs 3 in total, no matter how many lights you have.
They could not be controlled across a network.

I wanted a neat, flexible, upgradable modular solution which would allow complete control over every aspect of the lighting, no matter what model you were building.

How many light chips can be connected together?

Uo to 2000 with the Pro Controller, provided that they are powered correctly (please refer to the documentation). Using the supplied cables & pro power supply (5VDC 2 Amp), I recommend no more than 100, which is more than enough for most models - though it depends whether all the LEDs will be on at the same time, as the LEDs draw very little power when not illuminated. You can also reduce the maximum brightness of the entire system, which allows you to have more lights illuminated at the same time. However, at maximum brightness each LED can theoretically draw 60mA (20mA for a single colour eg red or dedicated white)

How bright are the lights?

Extremely bright, if you want them to be. Usually you will want to dim them down (via the configuration software) to provide the desired lighting effect.

How do I control the lights?

There are several options. The lights will all go to a pre-determined state when the controller is powered up. You can then either use physical buttons wired up to the pro controller, or you can connect the pro controller to a WiFi network and control the lights with a web browser. By default the controllers will also broadcast their own WiFi network which you can connect to for configuration and control. You can also control them via any 3rd party app or system capable of sending standard http commands.

How do I control the lights with an app?

There are several control apps available for iOS and Android which allow you to create a customised user interface and send IP commands to control the lights. Contact me for details and an example configuration file.

How do I control the lights with Amazon Alexa or Google Home?

via IFTTT.com using the Webhooks service - contact me for instructions.

How many physical control buttons can be connected to the pro controller?

Up to 8 can be used to change the lighting, plus one for shutting the system down, and another for powering it up, if required. (The controller will power up automatically when power is applied)

Can I also control standard LED lights, or relays etc with the solution?

Yes - there are 5 general purpose 3.3V DC output pins on the pro controller which can be turned on or off. These can control standard LEDs, motors, or any powered output. There is also an expansion board which lets you control 6 x generic 5V DC outputs to drive standard LEDs, per board.

Is the system compatible with NeoPixel / WS2812 / SK6812 addressable LEDs?

Yes it is - we recommend you only use ones purchased from this website, however any LED or strip using the above protocols, including the new ultra-high density COB strips, should be compatible.

What are the specifications of the pro control computer?

It is an RPi 3 Model A+ unit - 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core processor, 512MB RAM, dual-band wireless LAN.

Can I use one control computer to control several different models?

Yes - you can save and load different configurations to the pro controller whenever you wish to swap between models

Can I use one control computer to control several models at the same time?

Yes - provided you can run a cable from one model to the next.
